Biography

ProPath, a Sonic Healthcare anatomic pathology practice, is privileged to include Craig E. Litz, M.D., as a part of its dynamic medical staff. Dr. Litz is an award-winning, double board-certified pathologist with robust professional experience and a substantial publication history. He was named a 2020 Best Doctor by D Magazine.

Dr. Litz graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. During medical school, he was also a summer research assistant at the Naval Research Laboratories in Washington, D.C. He served a residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, where he served as chief resident. During his residency, he held a postdoctoral research position in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the University of Minnesota. He completed a fellowship in hematopathology, also at the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Litz has extensive professional experience, including teaching appointments and several medical directorships. He started his professional practice as a pathologist in the Department of Laboratory of the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis. While there, he held a teaching appointment in the hematopathology division of the same department, starting as an instructor before moving up to assistant, then associate, professor. He also held a position as an associate member of the graduate faculty in clinical laboratory science at the University of Minnesota. He then spent a year as a pathologist in the pathology department of Fairview Riverside Medical Center in Minneapolis. Dr. Litz has been a member of the ProPath team since 1997, starting as a pathologist. During this time, he served as the vice-chief, and then chief, of medical staff at St. Paul University Hospital in Dallas, TX, and currently holds the position of clinical professor in the pathology department of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Dr. Litz has held several directorships. He was the director of hematology laboratory at St. Paul University Hospital. He was also the medical director of Texas Health Surgery Center Dallas and the PPS medical director of North Central Surgical Center. He is currently the medical director of Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children and the North Center Surgical Center, both in Dallas. Dr. Litz is ProPath’s director of hematopathology division.

Dr. Litz has a considerable list of publications. He has a notable collection of peer reviewed publications in medical journals such as the American Journal of Surgery, American Journal of Clinical Pathology, Journal of Surgical Pathology, and Human Pathology, among others. He has written multiple book chapters, one in Anderson’s Pathology, 10th ed., and the other in Neoplastic Hematopathology. Dr. Litz has also presented and published an extensive list of abstracts and given a number of invited talks.

Dr. Litz belongs to multiple professional organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society for Clinical Pathology, and American Society of Hematology, among others. He is a fellow of the College of American Pathologists.

Dr. Litz holds full medical licensure and is board certified in hematology and anatomic and clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology.
